Chasing Graves – Ben Galley

Hey there,  book lovers!

I’m back to participating in another blog tour, managed by the lovely Dave from @TheWriteReads on Twitter, and this time around, there were a number of books to choose from! I chose to write a full review of ‘Chasing Graves’ … partially because of the gorgeous cover, and also to expand my horizons when it comes to reading fantasy. I’m honestly so glad I did, because this is a good one guys, and one not to miss!

So without further ado, let’s get to it!

Blurb:

Meet Caltro Basalt.
He’s a master locksmith, a selfish bastard, and as of his first night in Araxes, stone cold dead.

They call it the City of Countless Souls, the colossal jewel of the Arctian Empire, and all it takes to be its ruler is to own more ghosts than any other. For in Araxes, the dead do not rest in peace in the afterlife, but live on as slaves for the rich.

While Caltro struggles to survive, those around him strive for the emperor’s throne in Araxes’ cutthroat game of power. The dead gods whisper from corpses, a soulstealer seeks to make a name for himself with the help of an ancient cult, a princess plots to purge the emperor from his armoured Sanctuary, and a murderer drags a body across the desert, intent on reaching Araxes no matter the cost.

Only one thing is certain in Araxes: death is just the beginning.

Thoughts: I must say that I am quite impressed with this book. I love that it was quite dark, as well as completely different than other fantasy books I’ve been reading recently, as it’s very adult and mature, but not to the point where it’s so crude that it’s off-putting; there are some crude moments throughout the books, but those are one-offs and they highlight the mature and dark vibes of the story and plot. The characters too are very realistic; they’re not all good or all bad, but a realistic and engaging mix that keeps you guessing their next moves. The way that this book also tackled ghosts, and death in a very innovative way also kept me eager to find out more about the world and now these ghosts, or ‘shades’ were sold and made free, as well as what it’s like to actually live as a ghost or shade. The world was so well thought-out and I absolutely loved learning more about it while the story progressed.

I don’t want to spoil the story for anyone wishing to read it so I’ll stop here on my thoughts, but if you’re looking for a book that will keep you hooked and guessing, I highly suggest this one!

Ben Galley is an author that makes you re-think everything you ever knew about fantasy and his story-telling drags you deep into a very sinister and enchanting narrative that you just can’t get enough of. I will most definitely continue reading the series!
