IDE is Back! | JEF Malta

JEF Malta’s ‘Integrated Democratic Europe’ Simulation has returned for its 3rd edition, bringing in a new wave of countries, parties, debates and votes to the table, all of which are simulated by participants between 16 and 30 years old.

What is IDE?

IDE is a political simulation based on the democratic process on the European level, similar to a Model European Union – but in the fictional scenario of a united Europe. Participants debate together in teams and as individuals over policies and amendments they propose to a given policy resolution.

What do we do?

Groups of 3 to 5 people will work together to push their agenda in the best way possible, to discuss and defend their ideas and the importance behind their chosen policy amendments.

Teams take part in the ‘plenary session’ on the first day. You are given the freedom to name your group as you see fit, as well as determine its political orientation; participants can either join teams as individuals who are seeking a team, or they may sign-up with a group of friends in a pre-set group.

On the second day, participants will then compete on their own in the ‘senate session’ in a different role – as a senator. When acting as senators, participants must work in the spirit of their country (assigned at random) and push for their own agendas.

When and where?

On the 5th of July, a training session will be held where the participants will become familiar with the activities taking place as well as learn important skills and qualities they will put into practice during the next two days.

The 8th and 9th of July will see the participants forming parties which will take part in either a parliamentary seminar or a senate simulation. This will simulate what a fully integrated democratic Europe would look like. The groups will rotate each day. The closing ceremony will take place on the 15th of July.

All these events will be held at The Palace Hotel, Sliema. Participants are also expected to dress formally for the occasion, and to adhere to COVID-19 guidelines.

Do I need to pay anything?

Attendance is free for all participants and includes a complimentary coffee break on the 5th of July and complimentary lunches on the 8th and 9th of July. 🍽️

Any prizes?

Prize and competition winners will be determined via an internal scoring system used by external judges with a set of criteria. The first prize will include travel vouchers, with others in store for second and third. At the end of the event, you will also receive a YouthPass certificate.
